ASIST stands for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. It’s a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may be experiencing thoughts of suicide and how to work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Techniques taught in the workshop are based on the principle of first aid, providing initial help to reduce the risk of more serious harm.
The training is designed for caregivers, including but not limited to health workers, teachers, community workers, youth workers, volunteers, people responding to family and friends in crisis, and many others. The goal of ASIST is to enhance a caregiver’s ability to assist a person at risk of suicide until either the immediate risk of suicide is reduced or additional levels of support can be mobilized.
Understanding and applying the principles learned in ASIST can play a critical role in ensuring that individuals experiencing intense psychological distress can receive compassionate support and professional care aligned with best practices in suicide prevention.

The Importance of ASIST Training in Suicide Prevention
At Mental Health & Life, we believe that suicide intervention is a crucial skill that can save lives. Our Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop designed to help participants develop suicide intervention skills training that can be applied in real-life situations. ASIST teaches participants how to recognise suicidal behaviour, assess immediate risk, and take action to ensure the immediate safety of individuals at risk.
This practical training is based on real-world scenarios, providing the knowledge and confidence needed to support someone in distress. By integrating suicide prevention resources and understanding personal and societal attitudes, ASIST empowers individuals to make a difference when it matters most.
Who Can Benefit from ASIST Training?
ASIST is designed for anyone over the age of 16 who wants to support those struggling with suicidal behaviour. This includes:
- Healthcare providers such as nurses, therapists, and social workers
- Emergency service workers including paramedics and police officers
- Community resources such as charity workers and volunteers
- Workplace leaders looking to create a supportive environment for their employees
- Individuals with no formal training who want to be prepared to help a loved one
The intervention skills training ASIST provides is invaluable for both professionals and everyday people who want to learn how to provide suicide first aid support.
What You Will Learn in ASIST Training
By attending ASIST, you will gain the ability to:
- Recognise Suicide Warning Signs – Identify when someone is at immediate risk
- Develop an Effective Suicide Safety Plan – Work with individuals to create a life-saving resource
- Build Skilled Intervention Techniques – Apply the ASIST model to guide conversations
- Connect with Community Resources – Ensure individuals get the long-term support they need
- Practice Self-Care Effectively – Learn how to manage your own well-being while supporting others
These key elements ensure ASIST participants leave feeling confident and prepared to make a real difference.
The Difference Between ASIST and Other Suicide Prevention Training
Unlike general mental health first aid courses, ASIST training is suicide intervention-specific and focuses on suicide first aid interventions. It differs from programs like SafeTALK because it provides:
- A hands-on approach with practical training
- Two full days of interactive learning rather than a shorter awareness session
- A structured intervention model that prepares caregivers to act confidently in crisis situations
ASIST is the gold standard in suicide prevention, backed by decades of research and global recognition.
